Provenance of Dish
I recently decided to go primarily plant-based and around the holidays I was missing a “meat-like” main dish.
These crispy shiitakes make a versatile meat substitute and will wow the crowd!
One 16 oz container shiitake mushrooms
1 cup bread crumbs
2 cups crushed French fried onions
1 cup milk of your choice
1/2 cup flour
Pop the bottoms off of the shiitake mushrooms so they can sit flat.
Crack egg into a bowl and mix with milk. Crunch up French fried onions in a sealed bag. Mix with bread crumbs.
Coat shiitakes in flour.
Dip in milk and egg mixture.
Dip in bread crumb and French fried onion mixture.
Heat up oil of your choice in pan.
Fry the shiitakes until they are brown on each side.
Serve as a appetizer or main dish with mashed potatoes, use to enhance your favorite salad or make a Crispy shiitake mushroom wrap or sandwich!
