Healthy Holiday Travel: 6 Essential Tips for the Season
It’s hard to get into the holiday spirit when you’re not feeling your best. And when you’re away from home, maintaining your usual healthy habits can be a challenge. To help you prioritize wellness during the holidays, we’re sharing our top six essential tips for travel.
1. Stay hydrated, especially during air travel.
The human body is more than half water, so we need to drink up to stay healthy. All beverages are hydrating, except for alcoholic ones. If you get bored with plain water, sip on sparkling or flavored water, herbal tea, juice or even tea or coffee. Air travel is particularly dehydrating due to the dry air in the cabin, so you might consider adding electrolytes to your water bottle when flying. Fungi fact: Mushrooms are 90% water!
Tip: If you choose to imbibe, follow each alcoholic drink with a glass of water.
2. Set yourself up for better rest.
Have trouble sleeping in a bed that’s not your own? You’re not alone! Temperature, light and sound can all have a significant impact on sleep quality. Pack an eye mask and earplugs to block light and sound from your room. You can also use clothespins (or a pants hanger with clips) on hotel curtains that let the light in.
Tip: Noisy neighbors? Consider downloading a white noise app on your phone.
3. Don’t risk getting “hangry.”
Tracking down healthy food at airports or on the road is no longer impossible, but it’s often overpriced — and there’s no guarantee you’ll find something that suits your dietary preferences. Plan ahead and stash some healthy, shelf-stable snacks in your bag. If you’re traveling without access to a car, consider having groceries delivered as an alternative to ordering takeout.
Tip: Our Chocolate Cherry Bars taste like a treat but deliver the power of organic Lion's Mane, Turkey Tail, Reishi, Cordyceps and Chaga mushrooms in every bite. Each one provides 18% of your daily fiber, plus 4 grams of protein.
4. Wash your hands.
Whether you’re hosting guests or traveling this season, being extra careful about handwashing is a helpful habit. Don’t rush it: You should wash for 20-30 seconds, about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Your immune system will thank you later!
Tip: Multitask during your handwashing time. As you lather up, offer gratitude, practice your balance by standing on one foot or simply breathe deeply.
5. Move your body.
Exercise is one of the best ways to stay healthy — and it has benefits for both your mind and body. Dealing with holiday stress? Travel constipation? Sleep issues? Movement can help with all three!
Tip: Don’t want to pack a whole wardrobe of workout clothes? Stick to gentle movement like walking, so you can wear your everyday clothes, or gentle yoga, while wearing pajamas.
