Feeling the 3 P.M. Slump? Here’s How to Deal
Summers are the season of endless fun and light – so it’s no wonder we start to feel our energy wane as fall approaches. This time of year, sometime around 3 p.m., you find yourself staring at the same sentence you’ve read four times while contemplating another trip to the coffee machine.
The 3 p.m. slump happens to the best of us, and it’s a normal part of the ebb and flow of our daily energy. But before you automatically order another latte, check in with yourself. Do you need more energy? Better focus? Food? Water? Movement? Maybe just five minutes away from your screen and endless notifications?
Try one – or a few – of these strategies to get through the rest of your day.
1. Get outside for 10 minutes
Of course, we’re going to tell you to go outside. If we could prescribe time in nature for everyone, every day, we would. And we’re sure most of you would take us up on it.
Instead of scrolling through your phone during your afternoon break, step outdoors. Walk around the block. Sit in the sun. Look for mushrooms. Take the long way to the mailbox.
The goal isn’t to turn your break into another item on your to-do list. It’s simply to change your environment and give your brain a break from whatever you’ve been staring at all afternoon.
2. Add some movement
If you’ve been sitting for hours, get up. As humans, we are meant to move.
Make time to stretch, however it feels good to you. Take the stairs. Walk while you make a phone call. Dance your way through your current favorite song.
A few minutes of movement can break up a sedentary afternoon and create a clear dividing line between “I’ve been working all day” and “I have a few more things I need to accomplish.”
3. Ask whether you're actually hungry
Chances are, lunch was hours ago – and dinner is a while off. Instead of trying to power through hunger, consider whether your body might simply be asking for fuel. An afternoon snack that combines protein, fiber and nourishing fats can be more satisfying than whatever happens to be lurking in the office candy bowl.
And while you’re at it, drink some water. Sometimes the simplest check-ins are the easiest ones to overlook. Hunger and thirst share similar cues, and being a little tired or foggy can be a sign you need to drink up.
4. Call on your mushroom allies
If what you really need is a little support for the rest of your day, functional mushrooms can become part of your afternoon ritual. Energy Elixir is a caffeine-free blend of Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, ginseng and rhodiola designed to support energy, endurance, stamina and stress resilience.* Take a dropper in the afternoon when you want some extra support without pouring another coffee.*
For the afternoons when your brain feels like it can’t be tamed, Mind Capsules deliver 1,000 mg of organic Lion’s Mane per serving to support focus, mental clarity, cognitive performance and learning.* They’re designed for daily use, making them an easy addition to your work or study routine.*
5. If you want caffeine, rethink the ritual
Sometimes the answer really is a little caffeine. Instead of automatically reaching for another coffee, make the afternoon cup feel intentional. Our Mighty Mushroom Matcha combines ceremonial-grade matcha with Maitake, Reishi and Chaga. Matcha naturally provides caffeine alongside L-theanine to promote calm energy and focus.*
Whisking up a hot or iced matcha also forces you to stop what you’re doing for a moment – which might be exactly what your afternoon needs.
6. Work with your energy, not against it
If your concentration tends to fade in the afternoon, consider saving lower-lift tasks for that time. Answer emails. Organize tomorrow’s to-do list. Do administrative work. Then protect the hours when you naturally feel sharpest for tasks that require deeper thinking.
Most importantly, don’t treat an afternoon slowdown as something you’ve failed to optimize away. Sometimes your body and brain are simply asking for a change of pace. You’re a human, not a machine – and even machines need to power down sometimes.
